The Hapalua Invitational Team Challenge, set within Hawaii’s Half Marathon, introduces a compelling elite racing format for 2024. It’s a unique competition where two teams, each comprising 12 of Hawaii’s finest runners plus a professional captain, go head-to-head. Here’s a simplified explanation:
Teams: There are two teams: Team Duke Statue and Team Diamond Head. Each team has 13 members who are among the top runners residing in Hawaii.
Captains: Both teams will be led by professional athletes who act as captains. Calli Thackery and Jacob Thomson.
Race Start: All members of both teams will begin the race simultaneously with the mass start at 6 a.m.
Handicap System: To level the playing field, each runner receives a handicap based on their current form. This system aims to balance out differences in ability and ensure a competitive race regardless of individual runner’s baseline speeds.
Winning Criteria: The competition focuses on the collective performance of the team.
Prize: The winning team will be awarded a $5,000 prize to share!
This format adds a strategic layer to racing, emphasizing not just individual prowess but also teamwork and strategy in overcoming the handicaps. So, are you leaning more towards the spirit of Team Duke or Team Diamond Head?

Patrick Stover, age 35 (Team Duke Statue) I spend my days working at our local bike shop, helping others find their own passion for running or cycling, as well as serving as head track coach at Makua Lani Christian academy, where I direct the practices Monday – Friday. Afterward I make time for my own running and training before heading home to either make a delicious meal for my wife, or just feed our cats and enjoy a meal made by my loving wife! I wrap up the week by attending track meets on Saturdays that my student athletes participate in, just like I did as a keiki. That leaves Sunday, which is my day of rest. And by “rest” I mean a long run and running errands.
I run because I want to set an example for the athletes I coach. I ask a lot from them, and I just want them to know that I also expect that from myself. I also want them to realize that just because we come from a small town does not mean we are small. It does not mean we are insignificant. If we have the heart of a lion we can become the Kings of our Kingdom. Don’t ever give up, and don’t ever stop believing in yourself!

I was on the All-Navy Cross Country team in 2019 and hope to do it again in the future. I love running in Hawaii because of the amazing running community and breathtaking trails and mountain terrain. I recently won 1st place female overall in the 2023 Kaiwi Coast Run and 2nd place female overall at the 2024 Great Aloha Run. My PRs are: 5k: 18:16, 10k: 39:40, Half-Marathon: 1:34:00 (I have not run a half in 5 years… excited to see what I can do at the Hapalua!)

I began running in early 2019 because a friend said it’d be fun to run a marathon the following fall. Turns out it was so I ran another one two months after that, and I haven’t looked back since then. Originally from Houston, TX, I moved to Oahu from the South Carolina Lowcountry. On the weekdays I’m a marine biologist at the Oceanic Institute of HPU. On the weekends I’m an angler, hiker, snorkeler, and baker of bagels.

Profile
Bonny Suski, age 28 (Team Diamond Head) I am a US Coast Guard officer who moved to Hawaii this past summer, July 2023. I live here with my husband and our 2 dogs & 1 cat. I have been running since I was a young girl, and ran at the US Coast Guard Academy (DIII) for all four years I was there (2013-2017).
Greg Costello, age 23, (Team Diamond Head) I live in Kailua with my wife Laura. I was born and raised in Baltimore, Maryland. After running DIII at the US Coast Guard Academy, I was stationed here working on a 225′ Seagoing Buoy Tender. I coach track at Kalaheo High School and love being a part of the local running community.
Marissa Kunsch, age 29 (Team Diamond Head) Originally from Virginia Beach, VA, Missy moved to Oahu in 2012 to study environmental science and run cross country at HPU. She was a graduate assistant coach at HPU from 2016-2018 and became an assistant coach after graduating with an MA in sustainability in 2018. She currently works full time at Hawaii Energy and is an assistant coach at Punahou School. One of the things she values most about running is the community it brings. In 2022 Missy won the King’s Runner 10k
Ryan Von Brock, age 25 (Team Diamond Head) Ryan ran cross country and track at the USCG Academy before moving to Hawaii. He since completed his first triathlon at the 2023 Ironman 70.3 Hawaii (6:01) and first marathon at the 2023 Honolulu Marathon (3:09). His career bests also include: 10k (35:34), 8k (26:42) and 5k (16:01)
PR includes 2022 Hapalua on Team Hawaii where she finished in 1:29.40.
